OQEANOUS Plus "Symposium on Human Resource Development for Sustainable Use of the Ocean" held

TUMSAT held Symposium on Human Resource Development for Sustainable Utilization of the Ocean
On February 6, 2026, in connection with the OQEANOUS Plus program, a symposium on human resource development for sustainable use of the ocean was held, co-hosted by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Korea Maritime University, and Shanghai Ocean University.
The symposium was held in a hybrid format, both at the Rakusui Hall on the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology's Shinagawa Campus and online.
The first part of the event began with an opening address by Toshio Iseki, President of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, followed by a video message from Kuniaki Sato, Counselor for International Affairs at the Higher Education Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Next, Skretting President and CEO Park Ki-hyun and Mitsuo Tanimoto, Senior Managing Executive Officer of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., gave keynote speeches titled "What kind of global talent do companies seek?" The participating students and faculty listened attentively, followed by a question-and-answer session.
In the second part of the event, five participating students gave presentations on the results of the OQEANOUS Plus program, followed by a panel discussion titled "The Status of Global Human Resources in Asian Countries." Professor Ikuo Hirono of ICU served as coordinator, and the panelists included professors from Shanghai Ocean University, Korea Maritime University, Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, University of Malaya, and IPB University. Participants listened to the skills companies require of global human resources, depending on the situation in each country, the impact of degrees and credits earned at overseas universities on further education and employment, and the growth and success observed among OQEANOUS Plus program participants after their participation.
The event concluded with a closing speech by Professor Huh Cheol of Korea Maritime University, one of the host universities.
It is hoped that this symposium will further stimulate exchanges between students and faculty from OQEANOUS Plus partner universities.
On February 6, 2026, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) co-hosted the "Symposium on Human Resource Development for Sustainable Utilization of the Ocean" with Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU) and Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), in connection with the OQEANOUS Plus program.
The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format at Rakusui Hall on TUMSAT's Shinagawa Campus and online.
In the first session, following an opening remark by President Toshio Iseki of TUMSAT, a video message from Mr. Kuniaki Sato, Director, International Affairs Division, Higher Education Bureau at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), was introduced.
Next, Mr. Gihyeon Park, General Manager of Skretting Co., Ltd., and Mr. Mitsuhisa Tanimoto, Senior Managing Executive Officer of Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd., delivered keynote lectures titled "Global Human Resources." Participating students and faculty members listened attentively, followed by a Q&A session.
The second session featured presentations by five students participating in the OQEANOUS Plus program, followed by a panel discussion titled "Global Human Resources in Asian Countries." Coordinated by Professor Ikuo Hirono of TUMSAT, the included panel Professors from Shanghai Ocean University, Korea Maritime & Ocean University, Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Universiti Malaya and IPB University. Participants listened to insights on the skills of global human resources required by industry, the impact of degrees and earned credits at foreign universities and job hunting, tailored to each country's circumstances, and the growth observed in students after participating in the OQEANOUS Plus Program and their achievements after completion.
The symposium was closed by the closing remarks by Professor Huh Cheol from KMOU.
This symposium is expected to invigorate further exchanges among students and faculty members with OQEANOUS Plus consortium universities.
