Message from the President: Towards the Ocean and the Future Beyond

President of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to you all for your continued support of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.

Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has been conducting comprehensive education and research on the ocean under the motto of "Know the Ocean, Protect the Ocean, and Use the Ocean" in order to ensure that Japan continues to develop as a maritime nation. Looking back at its history, it can be said that the generous support of the "Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Foundation," established in 23, has enabled it to provide support for student studies, extracurricular activities, and educational and research projects, as well as museum-related projects, including the maintenance and management of the Meiji Maru, an important cultural property, and the Unyo Maru, a registered tangible cultural property.

Our university has implemented a quarter system and 105-minute classes university-wide from the 2024 academic year. This reform has enabled us to secure a longer summer vacation period than before, and has made it possible to offer a variety of classes, such as enhancing off-campus learning (studying abroad, mid- to long-term internships, etc.) and introducing active learning using the expanded class time.

Regarding the development of global human resources, we have launched the Japan-Nordic Collaborative International Education Programme for the Development of Advanced Specialist Engineers Who Will Create the Future of the Oceans (commonly known as the METIS Programme), and together with Nordic universities, we are implementing an educational programme aimed at improving and revitalising the marine industry and resolving global issues surrounding the oceans.

In response to the growing importance of AI and data science education in recent years, the Graduate School of Excellence program, supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, has been newly positioned as the "Marine AI and Data Science Degree Program," and is providing education that transcends the boundaries of majors.

For students who want to solve social issues through entrepreneurship, we offer a marine entrepreneurship training program and also hold a business plan contest.

In addition, the Faculty of Marine Engineering celebrated its 150th anniversary last November and is carrying out commemorative projects aimed at improving educational facilities and learning environments, and expanding grant-based scholarships.

Amidst the deepening turmoil in the international situation and concerns about its impact on the Japanese economy, our university wishes to provide an environment where students who wish to actively contribute to the future of the ocean can concentrate on their studies with peace of mind. To that end, we believe that the continuation and development of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Foundation project is essential. We ask for your continued understanding and support. (January 2026)
