Message from the President: Towards the Ocean and the Future Beyond
|
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to you all for your continued support of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has been conducting comprehensive education and research on the ocean under the motto of "Know the Ocean, Protect the Ocean, and Use the Ocean" in order to ensure that Japan continues to develop as a maritime nation. Looking back at its history, it can be said that the generous support of the "Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Foundation," established in 23, has enabled it to provide support for student studies, extracurricular activities, and educational and research projects, as well as museum-related projects, including the maintenance and management of the Meiji Maru, an important cultural property, and the Unyo Maru, a registered tangible cultural property.
Our university introduced a four-term system and 4-minute classes university-wide in April last year. This reform extended the summer vacation period, and increased the opportunities to participate in a wide variety of off-campus practical training, such as studying abroad and internships. Also, in October last year, we started the "Japan-Northern Europe International Collaborative Education Program: Advanced Professional Engineers Creating the Future of the Oceans" (abbreviated as "METIS"), which has greatly revitalized our global education, along with the "OQEANOUS Plus Program" by major universities in Japan, China, Korea, and ASEAN. Meanwhile, the Outstanding Graduate School Program, which has been implemented with support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, is finally in its final year, and we have started a new "Marine AI and Data Science Degree Program." We would like to develop this initiative, link it to the reform of the entire graduate school, and develop highly specialized human resources who will bring innovation to the marine industry.
Amidst the deepening turmoil in the international situation and concerns about its impact on the Japanese economy, our university wants to support not only students in financial difficulty, but also students who wish to actively contribute to the future of the ocean by helping to improve their skills. For this reason, we believe that it is essential to continue and develop the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Foundation project. We would like to ask for your continued understanding and support. (January 7)
