Measuring the operating conditions of marine diesel engines using vibration sensors - Effect of changes in fuel injector opening pressure setting on fuel injection vibration

[Details of award-winning research]
When a malfunction occurs in a fuel injector in a marine diesel engine, the combustion state deteriorates, causing various problems. However, the currently commonly used methods for detecting malfunctions in fuel injectors are difficult to distinguish, and issues remain. Therefore, we have been conducting research with the aim of developing a simple method for detecting the operating state and malfunction of fuel injectors, focusing on the vibrations that occur during fuel injection.

In this presentation, we measured and analyzed fuel injection vibration when there was a change in the valve opening pressure value during fuel injection (when a malfunction occurred in the fuel injection valve). The analysis results confirmed that changes in valve opening pressure cause differences in the timing of fuel injection vibration occurrence, and that vibration measurement can identify malfunctions in the fuel injection valve. It is believed that this measurement method can be used to detect fuel injection malfunctions or early signs of malfunctions while the engine is running.
