At the 12th ZAIKEN Festa held on October 23, 2025, graduate student Hiroki Ito of our university won the Grand Prize.
The Laboratory of Global Environmental Microbiology (Makita Laboratory), Department of Marine Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Waseda University, has been conducting joint research with the Kagami Memorial Research Institute for Materials Science (hereinafter referred to as ZAIK), a research center specializing in contributing to the construction of society in harmony with the environment, and this time they presented the results of their research. The winning poster will be exhibited at the main entrance of ZAIK for one year.

?Effect of iron-oxidizing bacteria in acid mine drainage water from Date Mine on wastewater treatment

[Details of award-winning research]?
 More than 70 abandoned mines across Japan still produce mine wastewater containing high concentrations of heavy metals, and treating it requires significant costs. Therefore, the use of iron-oxidizing bacteria (IBRs) is being considered as a low-cost alternative to the currently mainstream chemical treatment. IBRs are believed to be able to oxidize iron up to 10 times faster than inorganic oxidation in acidic environments, and this ability is being utilized in wastewater treatment. In this study, we investigated how seasonal changes in mine wastewater quality relate to the activity of IBRs. We conducted various on-site environmental measurements, chemical analysis of wastewater, and microbiological analysis in the laboratory to clarify the relationship between water quality and IBRs.
